Opéra Garnier is an imposing structure, built to the greater
glory of Napoléon III and then given a flourish in 1964 when
the main ceiling was painted by Chagal. Home more to ballet, since
the opening of the Bastille opera, it still plays host to touring
companies. Its marble interior is stunning and the chandelier in
the auditorium weighs a staggering eight tonnes. |
Christmas in Galeries Lafayette |
La Madeleine is a good starting place for a tour of Paris's unbelievably smart and outrageously expensive grands magasins. Browse the Fauchon store, which is to groceries what champagne is to lager. Outside turn towards Boulevard Haussmann and walk to find the famous department store Au Printemps. A little further is Galeries Lafayette.
For something more exclusive, go in search of designer clothes in Rue du Faubourg St Honoré. Not all of the contents of these grand shops are over priced and looking is fun. Maybe buy a French Monopoly board to satisfy the need to spend - it will be useful for planning the next trip.
La Madeleine itself has the charming Ste Marie-Madeleine, worth a visit to light a candle. The church mirrors the National Assembly buildings in Place de la Concorde at the other end of Rue Royale and a good jumping off point to switch from spending back to culture.
