From Ste Marie-Madeleine walk down Rue Royale and wonder at the 19th century grandeur Baron Haussmann masterminded as he cleared away medieval Paris. The city has a spacious, clean and designed feel where the Baron was most active. Place de la Concorde is noisy bustle with a grandly colonnaded
perimeter and the largest square in Europe. Centre stage is the
pink granite Luxor obelisk, 3,300 years old and brought from Egypt
as a gift in 1831. The dramatic Grande Roue big wheel
due to be dismantled on 1 January has won a reprieve (thanks to
popular support from Johnny Halliday among others). It may only
be half the height of the London Eye but still gives spectacular
views across the city and is only a fraction of the price. It will
remain in place until the end of 2001. |
Place de la Concorde |
The grand square has seen a lot in its short life including 1,343 guillotinings, as the Revolution turned bloody. It was not just Marie Antoinette and the royal bad guys, but anyone associated. Try dipping into Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities for an effective way to get the flavour.
Do not leave without propping up the bar in the Hôtel Crillon long enough to drink and think about Ernest Hemingway. He drank here so regularly that the former head barman has just written a mémoire. The view up the Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe is fantastic and the Louvre stands majestically at the end of the Tuileries gardens.
